Adaptive Mountain Bike Hire – Bowhead RX

Forrest MTB & Cycling Club is excited to have our very own Bowhead RX available for hire. This was made possible through grant funding from the Regional All Abilities Participation program from Sport and Recreation Victoria(opens in new tab) as well as Push Mobility(opens in new tab) generously subsidising the bike to allow this amazing opportunity to exist. For more information on this project, click here(opens in new tab).

The bike is an adaptive mountain bike or AMTB. It is a type of handcycle with a battery powered motor. The rider is strapped into the seat and spins the hand cranks to move the bike forward. There is a gear shifter on the right grip, plus brake levers on each crank. There is a Bosch display unit to show you information about riding mode, battery power and more.

Push Mobility subsidised the club bike to allow us to purchase it with grant funding we obtained. Having the bike able to hire and tested on real mountain bike trails will allow their customers better test ride so it's a win-win situation. How to Arrange a Hire

In a lot of ways, hiring the Bowhead is like hiring any other bike. Pick a date, sign a waiver and go for a ride. With this one, there's a couple of other steps.

Availability of Club Members

As this bike is owned by the Forrest MTB & Cycling Club, a club member needs to be available to handover the bike to you, and make any adjustments for you to be ready to ride. In most cases this will probably be Michelle who owns and operates the bike hire shop in town, but if she is unavailable due to work commitments (especially peak season/long weekends), then another club member may meet you. Unfortunately, if no club member is available, we will need to reschedule to another date/time.

Support Rider

If it is your first time hiring the club bike, then we require you to have a support rider with you. You may bring someone with you to ride together, and that's great! However if you need someone to accompany you and don't have someone who can help you, we can try to assist with this also. It may be a club member who is happy to volunteer and go with you for a ride, or if no volunteers are available, it may be possible to pay for a support rider to come with you.

If you are a more experienced rider, it may be possible to hire without a support rider after the first hire.  However we still suggest a support rider is always helpful for the simple fact that a recently fallen branch over the track can be very difficult to deal with alone. A second pair of hands can get you rolling again more quickly. While we do our best to provide up to date trail information, you might be the first person to come across and report a new branch down to the club.

Rider Insurance

As the club is unable to obtain public liability insurance to cover your use and hire of the adaptive bike you will need your own insurance in the event that you are injured while hiring this bike. You will need to have your own ambulance cover. You will need to sign our waiver and agree to reimburse the club for any parts and labour required as a result of your hire. Your hire fee goes towards general maintenance of the bike (professional servicing and regular replacement of parts as they become worn), it does not cover accidental damage caused by riders hiring the bike. You acknowledge that the club is run by volunteers and any support rider assisting you cannot be held liable for your use of the bike. You agree that you are wholly responsible for anything that occurs to you or the bike during your use of the bike.

Be Understanding

As far as we know, we're the first club in Australia to offer this so it's a brand new concept and it might take us some time to iron out issues as we gain experience. We're excited but we still have lots to learn and we're sure we are going to learn lots from each rider that hires our bike. We would love to receive your suggestions and ideas for ways to improve the process, or what would help you.
